Alexander was a temporary assistant in Belfast Central Library. He served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery and Royal Tank Corps.

William Brown (1895 – 1918)
Brown was an Assistant Librarian in the Lending Department of Belfast Central Library. He served with 1st North Irish Horse and later 9th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 11/12 August 1918. This collection also includes correspondence between Library staff and Brown’s father.

Thomas Coulson (1886 – 1971)
Coulson was the Branch Library Manager of Falls Road Library. He served with several battalions within the Royal Irish Rifles, rising through the ranks to become a Major. In 1930 he wrote the famous spy thriller ‘Mata Hari: Courtesan and Spy’.

Elliott was the Chief Librarian of Belfast Public Libraries from 1888 until his death on 23 January 1917. 'The Library Men’ who served wrote to the Chief Librarian during service. His return correspondence is included in this collection.
