Matthew Warren was born on 4 July 1893 in Belfast to Jane Kerr and William Warren, a pawn office clerk. He began work in Ballymacarrett Branch Library as an Assistant Librarian on 28 November 1906. At this time his home address was given as River Terrace which is close to the Ormeau Road. Warren joined the Queen’s University Belfast O.T.C. (Officers’ Training Corps) in 1913 and obtained a commission as Second Lieutenant to join the 14th Royal Scots on 30 June 1915.
It is clear that some of Warren’s correspondence is missing. The first letter included in this collection is dated from July 1915 but it refers to a previous (missing) letter. There is a gap in his collection between 25 March 1916 and 12 February 1919. During this period he was wounded by sharpnel in March 1916. He was later reported missing in May 1917, this is then changed to wounded and Prisoner of War at Cassel.
Warren returned to work in April 1919, his home address was given as 23 Lavinia Street but he resigned in September of the same year. He married Jeanette Darroch in Glasgow in 1920.
Warren died of shock in 1938 following an operation to remove a piece of shell from his right lung, an injury he sustained during the First World War.
