The visit highlighted the strong collaboration between Libraries NI and the Education Authority in supporting children’s literacy, reading for pleasure and lifelong learning. Working together, both organisations are committed to helping children develop confidence in reading and ensuring they have access to books, resources and opportunities that support their educational journey.

Pupils enjoyed spending time in the library and hearing more about this year’s Big Summer Read, which encourages children and families across Northern Ireland to continue reading throughout the summer months. Through initiatives such as the Big Summer Read, children are encouraged to see reading as an enjoyable and accessible part of everyday life, both in school and in their local library.

Jim O’Hagan, Chief Executive of Libraries NI, said:

"Reading is one of the most important skills a child can develop and it is something that extends far beyond the classroom. The Big Summer Read helps children continue their reading journey during the summer months while discovering the enjoyment that books, stories and libraries can bring. The support of the Education Authority is very much appreciated and helps us extend the reach of the Big Summer Read and encourage even more children to discover the enjoyment of reading.”

EA Chief Education Officer, Eve Bremner said: “Developing a love of reading from an early age is fundamental to supporting children’s learning, confidence and wellbeing. Initiatives like the Big Summer Read play an important role in helping children maintain and build on their literacy skills outside the classroom in a fun and engaging way. Our partnership with Libraries NI ensures that children and families have access to valuable resources in their local communities, encouraging reading for pleasure and supporting lifelong learning.”

The Big Summer Read is now underway in libraries across Northern Ireland, with this year’s Story Tree theme inspiring children to enjoy reading throughout the summer. With free activities, reading challenges and plenty of opportunities to discover new books, the programme encourages children to keep reading and make the most of their local library during the school holidays.
