Libraries NI is inviting people across Northern Ireland to take part in Go Green with Libraries NI, a month-long initiative designed to help individuals, families and communities discover practical ways to make a positive impact on the environment.

Taking place throughout September, the campaign will feature a range of free activities, workshops, talks, reading recommendations and community events, all aimed at helping people make small changes that collectively make a difference.

The initiative forms part of Libraries NI's commitment to the Green Libraries Manifesto, which recognises the important role libraries can play in supporting sustainable communities, sharing knowledge and helping people respond to environmental challenges.

In the past year, library users borrowed more than 3 million physical items from Libraries NI in the period April 2025 to March 2026. Every book borrowed, shared and enjoyed by multiple readers demonstrates one of the simplest and most effective examples of sustainability in action, making the most of existing resources rather than constantly purchasing new ones.

While environmental issues can often feel overwhelming, Go Green with Libraries NI focuses on simple, achievable actions that anyone can take.

From learning how to support pollinators and reduce waste, to discovering books on gardening, nature and sustainable living, libraries across Northern Ireland will be encouraging people to explore new ideas and develop practical skills.

Jim O’Hagan, Libraries NI Chief Executive said:

"Libraries have always been places where people share resources, learn new skills and connect with their communities. In many ways, libraries have been supporting sustainable living for generations.

Every day, thousands of people borrow books, access digital resources and make use of shared community spaces through Libraries NI. These are simple actions, but collectively they have a positive impact.

Go Green with Libraries NI is about helping people discover practical ways to make a difference, whether that is learning something new, borrowing instead of buying, supporting local wildlife or making one small change in their daily lives. Through this campaign we want to show that small actions really can have a shared impact."

As part of the campaign, Libraries NI is encouraging members of the public to make a personal Green Pledge during September.

People will be invited to commit to one simple action, such as reducing waste, using reusable products, supporting biodiversity, walking more often, growing food at home or borrowing more books from their local library.

Throughout the month, libraries will also showcase a specially curated collection of books and resources covering topics such as climate awareness, nature, gardening, biodiversity, conservation and sustainable living.

The campaign will be supported by a programme of events taking place in libraries across Northern Ireland, including talks, workshops, eco clubs and family activities. These events will provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn new skills, share ideas and connect with others who are interested in creating a more sustainable future.

By combining practical learning opportunities with access to trusted information and resources, Libraries NI hopes to empower individuals and communities to take positive action, however small, and demonstrate the important role libraries can play in supporting environmental awareness and community resilience.

Go Green with Libraries NI will run throughout September in libraries across Northern Ireland.
