Child reading a book

As World Book Day: ‘Read Your Way’ approaches on Thursday 7 March 2024, libraries across Northern Ireland are gearing up to celebrate the joy of reading, especially among children and young people.

This annual event serves as a reminder of the magic that books can bring into our lives and emphasises the importance of fostering a love for reading from a young age. Libraries play a crucial role in nurturing this love for literature, providing children with free access to a vast array of books, resources, events, and activities that spark their imagination and curiosity.

From captivating storytelling sessions to junior reading groups, libraries offer a range of regular activities designed to engage young readers and instil in them a lifelong passion for books. Whether it's diving into the pages of a beloved storybook or exploring new worlds through the pages of a fantasy novel, children are encouraged to let their imaginations soar and discover the wonders that reading has to offer in their local library.

As we celebrate World Book Day 2024, Libraries NI invites families and children from across Northern Ireland to call into their local library. Whether you're visiting to borrow a new book, bringing the family along to sign up or simply looking for an inviting and comfortable space to read, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Encouraging children and young people to visit their local library on World Book Day, Libraries NI Chief Executive Dr. Jim O’Hagan said:

"World Book Day is more than just a celebration of books; it's a celebration of the joy of reading. We know that reading for pleasure is the single most important indicator of a child’s future success and Libraries NI is dedicated to creating an environment where children can explore, learn, and most importantly, have fun with books.

“Reading for pleasure has many great benefits for children. It helps improve their literacy skills, expands their vocabulary, and enhances their creativity. By spending time in the library on World Book Day, children not only have access to a variety of books for free but also the opportunity to develop a love for reading that can last a lifetime.”

Libraries NI offers 96 library locations across Northern Ireland with a variety of books to borrow for free with a library card. Parents and caregivers can help children enjoy reading by making a visit to the library a regular habit. For anyone who cannot make it to a library we have eBooks and eAudiobooks available to download straight to your tablet or mobile device.
