Your local Library – A place to sit. A place to speak. A place to belong.

Loneliness Awareness WeekNot every day is a busy one.

Sometimes the house feels a bit too quiet.

Sometimes you just want to get out for a while.

Sometimes it helps just to be somewhere with other people around.

For many, that place is their local library, a place to sit, a place to speak and a place to belong.

As Loneliness Awareness Week (15–21 June) highlights how common these moments can be, libraries across Northern Ireland are reminding people that their local library offers something simple but important… a welcoming space where people can call in, spend time and feel part of their community.

It’s somewhere you can call in without planning ahead. Somewhere you can sit with a book or a newspaper, take your time, and not feel rushed. A space that feels familiar, where you can come and go as you please.
And while you don’t have to speak to anyone, you often find that you can.

A friendly hello at the desk, a quick chat in passing, a group that meets each week and starts to feel like part of your routine.

Small moments that can make the day feel a little lighter.

Libraries NI Chief Executive Dr Jim O’Hagan said:

“Our libraries are part of everyday life for so many people. They’re places where you can come in, take a seat and spend time in a way that suits you.

“For some, it’s about reading, using a computer or participating in an activity. For others, it’s simply about having somewhere to go and feeling comfortable being there. That’s what makes libraries so special, they belong to everyone.”

With 98 libraries in communities across Northern Ireland, they remain a familiar place people can call into and spend time when it suits.

Whether you stay for five minutes or a few hours, your local library is there as a place to sit, a place to speak and a place to belong.
