Libraries NI inspires young minds with STEM adventures during the Big Summer Read
Published 02 Jul 2026
This summer, Libraries NI is encouraging children to discover that reading and STEM go hand in hand through a programme of exciting hands-on activities taking place as part of the Big Summer Read.
Inspired by this year's Story Tree theme, libraries across Northern Ireland are combining books with science, technology, engineering and maths through a wide range of free events designed to promote curiosity, creativity and problem-solving.
Throughout the summer, children can learn to code with KUBO the robot, tackle code-breaking challenges, build fantasy worlds with LEGO, create clay animations, investigate wildlife during bug hunts, make musical instruments, take part in engineering-inspired building challenges and solve mystery trails, all inspired by stories and imagination.
By bringing together reading with practical activities, Libraries NI is helping children see how books can open the door to discovery, encouraging them to ask questions, think creatively and explore new ideas in fun and engaging ways.
Children can take part in a range of STEM-inspired events across Libraries NI, including a seed bomb workshop in Belfast Central Library on Thursday 9 July at 2:30pm, an instrument-making session in Magherafelt Library on Thursday 16 July at 11:30am and a Light and Sound event in Woodstock Library on Wednesday 29 July and a Viking engineering challenge in Carrickfergus Library on Friday 25 July at 11:00am.
With hundreds of free activities taking place in libraries across Northern Ireland, there are opportunities for children of all ages to discover new interests, develop new skills and enjoy reading throughout the school holidays.
