The Colour of Family: History, Race and the Politics of Ancestry

Michael O’Malley is Professor of History and Art History at George Mason University. He’s the author of multiple books including, most recently, The Color of Family: History, Race and the Politics of Ancestry (Chicago 2024).  

It tells the story of how his Irish ancestors were declared to be black by the state of Virginia. He will be discussing how Americans understood “Irish” from the colonial period through the early 1800s, using mostly advertisements for runaway indentured servants.
